How to Fill Out a Scanned PDF With No Form Fields

You open a PDF, click where you should type, and… nothing happens. That's a flat or scanned PDF — it's really just an image, with no interactive fields. The good news: you can still fill it out completely.

Why some PDFs have no fields

Interactive forms are built with special field objects (an "AcroForm"). Scanned paper and many exported documents don't have them — so instead of clicking a field, you place your own content on top of the page.

Fill a flat PDF in the browser

1. Open the document in the PDF editor.
2. Use the Text tool to click anywhere and type your answers. Match the font size to the form.
3. Use the Check tool for tick boxes and the Date tool for dates.
4. Add your signature with the Sign tool.
5. Download with Flatten on.

Tips for scans

• Zoom in to align text with printed lines and boxes.
• Straighten first if the scan is crooked — rotate the page in the Pages panel.
• Use checkmarks, not typed X's, for a cleaner look.
• Increase contrast by choosing a solid black text color.

What about searchable text?

Placing text on a scan doesn't make the scanned words searchable — that requires OCR, which converts the image into real text. Filling the form doesn't need OCR, though; you're simply adding your answers on top.
