How to Add a Watermark to a PDF (Text or Image)

Document toolsJul 16, 2026ยท3 min read

A watermark marks a document as Draft, Confidential, or Copy, or brands every page with your logo. You can add one to a PDF for free in your browser.

Text watermark

  1. Open your PDF in the editor and open Tools.
  2. In the Watermark section, choose Text and type a word like DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL.
  3. Adjust the opacity, tilt angle, size, and color. A light, 45ยฐ diagonal watermark is the classic look.
  4. Click Apply โ€” it's stamped on every page โ€” then download.

Image watermark

Switch to Image mode to use a logo instead. Choose a PNG or JPG, set the size as a percentage of the page width, and lower the opacity so it sits softly behind your content. This is perfect for company branding.

Tips

  • Keep opacity low (10โ€“25%) so the watermark doesn't obscure the text.
  • Use a diagonal angle for Draft/Confidential stamps so they're clearly overlays.
  • Apply last, after merging and reordering pages.

Watermark vs. header

A watermark sits behind or across your content on every page. If you just need a line of text at the top or bottom, a header or footer is cleaner โ€” see page numbers, headers & footers.

Free and private

Watermarking runs on your device, so your document is never uploaded. Add watermarks to as many PDFs as you like, free.
